Hi everyone! I thought I might talk a bit today about a creative project that I haven’t really mentioned here yet: my next music album. Besides working on video game soundtracks and Melolune, I also have a lot of random songs that I’ve put together over the years (some are fully produced, while some I’ve only performed at events and never got around to recording). So I’m going to be working with the director of music over at Sony (Chuck Doud) on putting an album out… right now I’m pretty knee-deep into finishing Melolune, but as soon as it’s done I’ll hopefully be spending more time in the studio working on these old songs (as well as some new ones, too) ^_^ I’ll try to keep you guys updated!

For now… here are a couple samples of songs we’ve been working on. These are just scratch vocals on my part, so sorry if they aren’t that good:

Lighthouses

The Last Day

Oh, and on a completely unrelated note… George and I watched “How to Train your Dragon” this past weekend and we LOVED it… I haven’t enjoyed a movie this much in such a long time. I’m a sucker for stories that involve relationships between humans and animals (or otherworldly creatures like dragons or iron giants or huge golden eagles in Australia), and I thought they did a really great job with that part. I was so endeared to the dragon by the end of the movie. I encourage you to check it out it if you want to see a really whimsical and touching fantasy-adventure film.

(I saw the American-version… but I thought the Japanese poster had a really cute picture on it)

  1. Glad to hear about the album deal! Thats awesome.

Out of curiosity how are you planning on distributing Meloune? Are you going to sell it? Shareware it?

I haven’t seen the movie yet but I really want to. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things.

    • Thanks! Hm, I think I might try selling it… but I’m not yet sure how. It will be available through my website for sure, but I might also try to put it in a few portals. I’ve been talking with Amanda from Amaranthia (she’s really nice), and I think it would be nice to have my game available there since there are a lot of folks who enjoy SNES-style rpgs there.

Yes, it’s a wonderful film! I hope you get a chance to watch it!

  2. This is such great news! My friends and I have been following your music since we first heard “Faster” many years ago (that was one fabulous song). I wish you lots of luck with your creative endeavors, and please let us know how your album is coming along!

    • Aw, I’m glad to hear that! I really enjoyed working on “Faster.” I’ll definitely keep you updated on the album progress!

  3. Laura I love your music! You have many fans in the Philippines so someday you must come here and do a concert for us, okay??❤❤

    • Thank-you Maria ^_^; I would love to do that someday!

  4. I’ve just found your music, and I must say I like what I’m hearing. It’s rather mellow and slow, which of course allows a lot more emotion to come through. :3 Please finish the album. :>

Wow, an entire game created solo. Ha, every gamer’s probably had a dream at some point to create his/her own game, but wow. And compose music.

    • Thank-you, I’m glad that you like it! I’ll try my best to finish the album and game!

  5. Oh, so very, very, awesome! Any idea when it’s coming out? I can’t wait!

    • Hm… to be honest I have no idea, hehe ^_^; A lot of the songs are already written though, so much of what we’ll be doing revolves around production. I’m hoping Melolune will be finished within the next couple months, so we’ll start working more on the album after that.

  6. ps. I still liked the first sample of Lighthouses better! Any chance that might appear?😀

  7. One more comment, to enable the notification of other comments via email because I forgot to check it D:

  8. I’m very happy to see that you’re releasing more of your non video game music! I love your voice and your songs a lot! I can’t wait to hear the rest of them ^_^ I definitely look forward to buying your album.

    • Thank-you🙂 I really like working on songs (with words), so it’s nice to get the chance to do that now and then.

      • Yeah! Your lyrics are amazing too! It’s hard to choose, but I think my favorite lyrics are from “Call Me Home”. They’re very powerful, but I feel like anyone could relate to them!

  9. Is this the type of album release that will be in stores like Walmart, Best buy, Amazon.com or is this an indie release?

It would be awesome to see your name in the charts atleast 1/200 on billboard would be good!

Don’t get me wrong I like other stuff on billboard but your stuff is more real it’s not over produced by producers out to make a dollar. Your stuff is real. It would be cool to see you there someday..
    —-
Zombie ga yatte kita. Atleast once or twice a day I think of that song. I only seem to remember the chorus.

Are you going to be doing anymore Japanese songs? I love your voice in the Japanese songs!

    • Thank-you Will, I dunno why, but that was a very motivating comment🙂 I’m actually not sure what kind of release it would be; I’m not currently signed to a label… and although I am working with people from Sony, they’re from the Playstation branch of the company (SCEA) as opposed to the music entertainment branch of the company… so I guess you could say it’s an indie effort on all our parts since we’re doing it as a hobby. But knowing Chuck, he’d probably try to get the album into mainstream channels😛

Hehe, I’m glad you like the Japanese version ^_^ I would love to do more Japanese songs. I think it would be really neat to work with a good Japanese lyricist someday too, because it can be tough for me to express myself lyrically in Japanese.

      • I’m sure your looking for a professional Japanese lyricist. But if you are ever looking for a indie lyricist a friend and I have been trying to break into the lyricist field for awhile now, we have had little results.. Both of us have been writing songs since we were real little. She is fluent in Japanese and I am fluent in English. I write songs in English and she translates them into Japanese, and she writes songs in Japanese and translates them into English and I give them a better lyrical flow.. We try to write songs that people will listen to and say “hey we have experienced that in our life”..

It would be cool to work with someone like you someday..

We’ll always remain fans! You are great.

        • Thanks so much for the offer Will, that’s really nice of you! I’ll definitely keep you both in mind! Also, I wish you both lots of luck and success in the area of writing lyrics ^_^

  10. Hey Laura! Great news regarding the new album, it’s really great to see that your music is doing well, even “Zombies On Your Lawn” was pretty awesome already. I’m glad to see your music is getting the attention it deserves!

    God Bless and take care!

    – Stephen Yap

    • Thank-you Stephen! Hope you have a great day!

  11. These new pieces are great! You’re able to write with a style that we don’t get to hear nearly enough of these days. Your “accompaniment” parts are always interesting to listen to, relying very little on sustained chords. I almost wish I could hear you write music for some old NES games. There weren’t many people that could make music sound good with those polyphony restrictions, but I think you could have done it. Your style certainly works well today, though! You also have an undeniable gift for melodies people can relate to. It makes for an uncommon and very cool combination.

    • Thank-you Tyler, that was a really nice compliment. It’s always nice when people notice the details I put into the arrangements🙂 I think it would be a lot of fun (and also a challenge) to write NES music… some of my favorite VGM comes from that era, and I have a lot of respect for composers who could put together such great music given the technological restrictions.

  12. HOORAY, you’re making a new album!!😀 Keep up the good work!!
And Dragon was a decent movie, a bit of a cliche, as everyone could predict what would happen (for the most part) but then again, Avatar was also a bit of a cliche and I thought it was the best movie since the Incredibles, or Nemo. 9.5/10

    • Thanks Nonny! I’ll try my best ^_^ I’m always surprised that I can enjoy the same human-animal-relationship-story told in different styles… somehow it always gets to me ;_; Have you seen Iron Giant before?

      • haha… weird, I never actually thought of that one as a human-animal movie… yeah, that was a good movie.
Even better was My Dog Skip, that one was one of the only movies that could actually make me cry… O.O

  13. Marry me. Just kidding. But seriously.

  14. I hope you can give us more samples of your album! (Like a title, and demos of the songs as you finish them) I can’t wait for it to come out so I can beg my mom to give me a copy and have her say “No” because of my grades. Then start working like mad so she’ll get me a copy. I love your music! It’s… Well, I listen to tons of J-pop, and your music tops most of the songs I’ve heard. (Because of that whole ‘American J-pop’ thing. Your music can’t be classified like that. Your music is Laura Shigihara’s and nothing else/nothing less) Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing your album soon! ^____^

    • Aw… thank-you Yoru, that was a really wonderful and inspirational compliment ^_^; I’ll try my best to make a really good album, and I’ll post as much information/samples as I can!

  15. Wow! Thats awesome! I have had your previous songs on heavy rotation on my regular playlist and I’m excited to be adding more! I think its great that you are able to pursue your passions in music and games like you do, its very inspiring🙂
