“Uraniwa ni Zombies ga!” lyrics
July 21, 2009 at 1:37 am | Posted in Uncategorized | 45 CommentsTags: plants vs zombies, uraniwa ni zombies ga
Hi everyone… I’ve got something for you today… I’ve been receiving a lot of requests for the lyrics to the Japanese version of the Plants vs. Zombies song (“Uraniwa ni Zombies ga!”), so I decided to post them here for you
I also wanted to try and answer some of the questions I’ve been receiving about the song since it was first released:
What came first, the Japanese or the English version?
The English version came first. I decided to make a Japanese version afterwards because I thought it would be fun, and being half-Japanese, I always look forward to the chance to represent both sides.
How did you come up with the tune for this song?
When I was composing the music for the pool level in Plants vs. Zombies, I found that I was really partial to one of the subtle background melodies… I thought it would be cool to take that melody and spin it into its own song.
Why do the English and Japanese lyrics have slightly different meanings?
When I set out to make the Japanese version, my goal was to try as best I could to maintain the original melody and meaning behind the lyrics in the English version, but give it its own flavor as well. For those of you who speak both English and Japanese, you know that one sentence in Japanese is quite a bit longer than its English equivalent (which is one of the reasons those old Godzilla dubs are so hilarious). So I worked with my Dad to come up with lyrics that fit a more “children’s song” style… that way the song felt like its own song (rather than just a translation), and it really matched the sunflower. It also solved the problem of matching the melody despite the disparity in sentence length (but as such, the meanings of some of the sentences were changed).
Who is voicing the Japanese zombies, and why do they not sound like typical zombies?
My Dad is the voice of the Japanese zombies (George is the voice of the English ones). Originally we were going to have the Japanese zombies just sound like regular zombies… but as I was reading through the lyrics, as a joke I started reading them as if I were one of those highly energetic Japanese gameshow hosts. It was such a weird combination that we all started laughing and decided to have my Dad use this kind of voice instead. I thought it was so hilarious, because you’re expecting growling-zombies, but instead you hear a voice like a Japanese gameshow host saying things like, “oh, please let me have your tricycle” which is so weird and awesome.
Are you the sunflower in both versions?
Yes
Can you please post the lyrics to the Japanese version?
No problem… here they are. Enjoy!

Super Meat Boy Soundtrack by Danny Baranowsky!
Thank-you so much! I’ve been looking for these lyrics everywhere. The Japanese zombies are so funny, they do sound like those crazy gameshow hosts on Japanese variety tv. What great idea!
Comment by Hei— July 21, 2009 #
No problem
I’m glad you liked the Japanese zombies… I can’t listen to it without cracking up, partially because it’s my Dad, and partially because it’s so unexpected
Comment by shigi— July 23, 2009 #
Hi Laura/Shigi, we love your songs! Do you think you could tell us the meaning behind the Japanese lyrics? Also, any chance of releasing a PvZ soundtrack? I know so many people who would want to buy one. Anyways, keep up the great work!
Comment by John— July 21, 2009 #
Thank-you, I’m really happy to hear that! No problem, I’ll post the translation below. As for releasing a PvZ soundtrack, I would really love to (I even have a few unreleased tracks that I’d want to include on it)… but I have to wait and see if Popcap will let me do it. I’ll definitely keep you posted though!
For the most part, the Japanese and English version have the same meaning, but the wording is altered to match the style of a Japanese children’s song (and for the sake of rhyming and fitting the melodic structure)… here is the translation:
Himawari
Sunflower
(chorus)
Zombie ga yatte kita x3
The zombies have come
Zombie wa dette ita
The zombies have left
(verse 1)
Zombie wa kowai gaikotsu
A zombie is a scary skeleton (undead creature)
Hanabira zenbu o toritagaru
Who wants to bite off all of my petals
Sono ato atama wo tabetagaru
And then eat the head
Tadano Himawari
I’m just a sunflower
Dakedo watashi wa tsuyoi!
But I am strong!
Noumiso ga suki
You like brains
Zombie wa kirai
But we hate zombies
(pre-chorus 1)
Football de asonda yo!
I used to play football!
Helmetto wo kabutta zo!
I used to wear a helmet!
Screen door wo motta zo!
I have a screen door! (it sort of means “I’m ready with my screen door!”)
Oretachi Zombie, Zombie, Zombie da!
We are the zombies!
(chorus repeat)
(verse 2)
Uraniwa de asobitai
I want to go play in the backyard
Atama wo taberu no yamenasai
Please don’t eat my head
Noumiso niwa cholesterol ga ippai
Brains have a lot of cholesterol (this is true… ounce for ounce brains have more cholesterol than virtually any other food)
Shinda node kankei nai kedo
You’re dead, but it doesn’t really matter
Solar power de tatakau yo
Because we will use this solar power to fight
Shokubutsu wo mamoru tame
and to defend the plants
(pre-chorus 2)
Sono sanrinsha choudai
Would you please give me your tricycle? (this grammar is similar to how a child would ask for something… like, “hey, give me your favorite toy”… except since a zombie is saying it, it is threatening)
Atama ni butter ga kuttsui jata
I’ve got butter on my head
Noumiso taberu zo!
I’m gonna eat your brains!
Oretachi Zombie, Zombie, Zombie da!
We are the zombies!
(chorus repeat)

I would love a PvZ soundtrack.
also on the JP lyrics are you missing the “sunflower” at the beginning?
Comment by patrick hulman— July 22, 2009 #
Hi Patrick, thanks for pointing that out! I made sure to go back and add “himawari” (sunflower) to the beginning of the lyrics ^_^ And I would really love to release a PvZ soundtrack… I kept all the original .wav files for this purpose, but I’m waiting to see if Popcap will give me permission to release one.
Comment by shigi— July 23, 2009 #
Please please please make a sequel to this ridiculously cute and funny game! I honestly can’t get enough of it! That music video is a little bit of hilarious creativity, I was completely surprised when I got the end!
Comment by Kris G— July 24, 2009 #
Hi Laura! I loved the game, and I’m absolutely crazy about your song! I downloaded both versions, and I listen to them on repeat

Hi Laura, I just wanted to say your work from PvZ is brilliant. It really adds an immersive factor to the game. I just finished PvZ and I have to say it did a decent job distracting me from work. I’m a big fan & promoter of video game music, from the classics to today’s and I can’t wait to see more of your work in the future, Good Luck!.
Comment by Dave— July 31, 2009 #
Thanks for the lyrics, but could you please post them in Japanese kana? I wanna keep improving my Japanese and how could I do that better than by singing along with that song

Hi Laura!
ummm not really related to PVZ but i got here because of the song Faster which you sang. I Really liked the song but there are some parts i don’t understand the lyrics or rather my hearing is probably the problem. = ) I didn’t know where to paste this so… Thanks a lot! Just hearing your voice after one song I was already enchanted and became a fan. I’m so looking forward for this thanks a lot! More power to you! I also tried your game btw. It was also great!

Comment by Ojii— October 14, 2009 #
I think it doesn’t sound like “sunflower” at the very beginning in the English version, although the Japanese version is Himawari. Could you tell me the first word in the lyric? It sounds so cute!
Comment by Michelle— October 27, 2009 #
It really is Sunflower. Maybe you hear something a little different, maybe its because of the inhaling at the beginning or that it might sound a little more like Sungfrower?
Well I Wouldnt know I hear Sunflower from the start and just listened to the first word 10 times to find out what made you think its something else ‘^^
Comment by Emanuel— October 27, 2009 #
I heard ‘Im flower’ instead of ‘Sunflower’,LOL^V^
i really enjoy it. My sist is going crazy cuz I make her hear that song again, again,n again. Laura, could u give the musical score of it? Thanx.
Comment by Vicky— November 22, 2009 #
Dear Laura,
I love your song! I think that it’s very sweet. I’m trying to find the lyrics for Look Up At The Sky, but I can’t find it anywhere! Also, it would be nice to have the lyrics to your other songs.
Keep Up the Good work!
Musically yours,
Crystal

Could you post the lyrics to your other songs? I love Call Me Home~ ^__^
Comment by DinDeen— December 5, 2009 #
The very first time I heard the song after completing the game, I thought it sounds like those cheerful ending themes in Japanese anime. I find the Japanese version to sound much cuter and definitely more hilarious with the “oretachi zonbi, zonbi, zonbi da!”
Comment by Randius Ferng— December 15, 2009 #
Ok, I’m sooo late to Plants vs. Zombies, but I just bought it this morning, and the music video is so hilarious, can’t wait to hear the Japanese version which will force my to re-learn my basic Japanese.
Comment by Ravin' Ray— December 22, 2009 #
I clicked Credits out of curiosity and was treated with the biggest WTHLOL ever. The game was addicting enough, and this theme song propels it soundly into classic and memorable territory. It’s just so damn funny and good

I’ve been playing Plants vs. Zombies for such a long time for now, and decided to say “Thank You” to Laura Shigihara, for such a wonderful soundtrack.
I hope PopCap would let you release a OST CD for Plants vs. Zombies.
Another thing I would adore is the Instrumental track for “Zombies on your lawn”. I love singing, and would love singing this song!
Anyway, Thanks a lot for your work!

Hey, Laura! A friend of mine just showed me the ending video of PvZ yesterday, and I went crazy with Zombies on Your Lawn! This music is so addictive! And your voice is sooooooooo beautiful! Love it so much!
Today I’ve found the japanese version, and is super cute!
Now I’m gonna search for more of your work ^^
Hope you can release the entire soundtrack!
Comment by Sam— October 5, 2010 #
The game is still a highly addictive waste of useful time and songs are really cute. I don’t speak a work of Japanese but seem to prefer that version of the song. Your voice sounds real great there. Wonder if there are more songs in your repertoire.
Comment by Dmitriy— October 19, 2010 #
Hi Laura,
I just started my PvZ not long ago and find it additive. I searched over the web and found your song. It is beautiful!
I am learning Japanese and have tried to retype your lyrics into Japanese character. I would deeply appreciate if you could take a couple minute to correct my typing.
Thanks for the great song!

I don’t know how many Juggalos you’ve met in your life, but you can count this one as a fan! I think I like the Japanese version just slightly better, mostly because of your Fathers non-threatening tone for the Zombies. You yourself have a marshmellowy-ness to your voice that is very fitting for the silliness of the subject matter. Good job and keep it coming. ß*)

Himawari
(chorus)
Zombie ga yatte kita
What is the phrase that comes in between? It starts out Himawari…. Say noh? then Zombie Ga yatte kita…. is that something like let’s go or let’s begin?
